Physiotherapist - Lynn Brandon
Lynn Brandon completed her degree in physiotherapy at the University of British Columbia in 1986. Over the past 24 years, her experience working in hospital and private practice has allowed exposure in many areas of physiotherapy. In 1994 she co-founded Charlottetown Physiotherapy where she was able to expand her skills in the area of sports and work injury management as well as continued post-graduate training in acupuncture. In 2001, after completing all the courses available through the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute in Toronto, she became certified to practice acupuncture and has found this to be a very effective adjunct to her practice.
During her Maritime years, Lynn was actively involved with her professional association and community serving on the Provincial Licensing Board and was a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Stratford serving as a Board Member and receiving the Presidents Award of Merit in 2004. Serving the community continues to be an important part of life for Lynn as she prepares to serve as the President of the Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise in 2011-2012. Lynn volunteered with the Sharks Swim Team as Meet Manager and dry-land training as a Pilates Teacher.
She has volunteered as a guest speaker for a number of organizations over the years, which has allowed her the privilege of sharing her expertise with others and hopefully passing along some information people can find useful in their everyday life.
Lynn's interest in fitness and living an active lifestyle evolved from her years growing up in the Comox Valley where the outdoor pursuits of hiking, cycling and water related activity were an integral part of childhood. Together with many years playing volleyball, these things played an important role in shaping her pathway in life. For several years, Lynn was a Course Instructor for Fitness Leaders. For nearly 25 years she has been teaching fitness, initially as an Aerobics Instructor and Personal Trainer becoming certified with STOTT Pilates in 2002. She holds STOTT Certification in Matwork and Reformer, as well as Advanced Certification and specialized training for Injuries and Special Populations. Lynn has found Pilates to be a good fit with her paradigm of holistic practice and is a lovely complement to all other forms of exercise. Her unique blend of warmth, sensitivity and positive energy provides clients with a full spectrum of spiritual, intellectual and physical enhancement.
In 2005, Lynn and her family returned home to the Comox Valley where she founded Bodyworx Physiotherapy and Bodyworx Pilates & Health located at a beautiful facility known as the Manor, overlooking the Comox harbor and mountains. In addition to innovations such as a fully equipped Pilates studio, Lynns clinic offers Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy and Neuroproprioceptive Taping. Lynn has been a course Instructor for Neuroproprioceptive Taping since 2008.
Lynn enjoys her clinical work and teaching immensely and finds great joy in sharing her passion with others.
Lynn and her husband Allan live in Comox. They have three children Kali, Heather and Adam and a Duck Toller, Riley.
Brenda Bio
Physiotherapist - Brenda Walsh
Brenda graduated from the University of Alberta in 1986 with a Bachelors degree in Physiotherapy. She began her career in Calgary in an acute care hospital.
Brenda has worked full-time in private practice since 1992, including a Sports Medicine Clinic in Calgary and a Rehabilitation center in Victoria. She has done numerous post-graduate courses in physiotherapy in Alberta, B.C. and Australia, where she worked and traveled for a year in 1992. Brenda moved to the Comox Valley in 2004.
In 2001 Brenda completed an advanced training program in Vancouver, BC. Over an 8 month period, the best clinical instructors over Western Canada provided weekly sessions and comprehensive review of orthopedic and manual therapy coordinated by Diane Lee, FCAMT. She found the comprehensive program complimented her work in private practice immensely. In 2003 she fulfilled all requirements for a Diploma in Manipulative Therapy. In the fall of 2009 Brenda completed a Level 4 Orthopedic course for spinal manipulation.
Manual therapy continues to be a major focus in her treatment approach, using her hands-on skills to stretch, release or relax soft tissue. She combines this with movement re-education and strengthening to improve posture, alignment and to restore painfree movement. Manual therapy and movement re-education are very helpful in alleviation of spinal problems, post-operative stiffness, repetitive strain injuries as well as recovery from whiplash injuries.
Brenda is also a compassionate and encouraging rehabilitation coach, setting her clients up with goal-oriented home exercise routines. She believes in client-centered rather than a cookie cutter approach to personalized exercise routines. In designing a training program for an athlete we tailor the exercises to be specific to her client's sport.
Brenda has a special interest in training balance and agility, and core strength. The new exercise routines she is learning through Pilates at Bodyworx Physiotherapy have given her an exciting new array of options for rehabilitation and exercise training. One does not have to be injured to benefit from balance and core strength!
Another area of special interest for Brenda is in Women's Health. She has specialized training to treat pelvic floor disorders, with applications for new mothers, women with pelvic floor pain or prolapse, and incontinence. She has been liaising with the gynecologists and midwives in Comox Valley since moving here in 2004.
Brenda has trained to use Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy. She and Lynn Brandon have developed evidence-based treatment programs for Tendinopathy, which we use in the acute and sub acute phase of tendon overuse injuries.
Brenda volunteers for a number of community events in the Comox Valley, including the BC Special Olympics and Musicfest. She studied Spanish for 2 years before volunteering in Costa Rica in 2008. While living in Victoria she was a part of Big Brothers and Sisters. Brenda was a guest speaker for the Crown Isle Ladies Golf Club, Mulligans and for Comox Recreation on golf injury prevention. She spoke on pelvic floor health with several interest groups in the past.
An outdoor enthusiast since her childhood, Brenda loves to hike and ski. She is an enthusiastic ocean kayaker, with insight in treating and preventing paddling injuries. Prior to a hip injury 5 years ago she was a middle and long distance runner. Her latest indoor passion is ballroom dance which she took up enthusiastically 3 years ago.

Rick Bio
Neurophysiotherapist - Rick Smith
I have been a practicing physiotherapist for over 10 years. After graduating from the school of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of British Columbia with a BSc in Physical Therapy I pursued experiences that would consolidate the full spectrum of my training. I worked in a broad range of specialties both in hospitals and in the community, working with children and older people, those recovering from sports injuries to those with spinal cord injuries. This eclectic background gives me an holistic understanding of the people I treat. I understand the complexity of the interconnected systems that make up an individual and the needs of that individual to function in their home and community.

With this broad foundation I was then able to focus my attention on my greatest passion: the treatment of people with neurological impairments. For this I undertook specialized training in the Bobath/NDT approach which gives me the skills to assess and treat the unique aspects of patients recovering from neurological injury and disease. I continue to maintain a part time practice at St Josephs General Hospital while offering this much needed private service to the community through the Bodyworx Physiotherapy clinic.
And, to save you asking when you meet me, I am 6'7" and, no, I did not play basketball.

Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) in B.C. are trained in the assessment and diagnosis of soft tissue and joints of the body, and the treatment and prevention of injury, pain and physical disorders. RMTs are dedicated to treating your symptoms of pain and dysfunction, including the underlying causes.
It is widely understood that massage therapy decreases stress and helps control pain. Perhaps less known is the effectiveness of massage therapy in treating deeper structures of the body such as ligaments, bones and joints, fascia, blood vessels, organs and other soft tissues of the body. Massage therapy can provide relief for many common conditions such as migraine headaches, tendonitis, arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, sports injuries and various other soft tissue sprains and strains.
Benefits of Massage Therapy
can include:
* Reducing or eliminating pain
* Improving joint mobility
* Improving circulation
* Improving immune system
functioning
* Increasing lymphatic
drainage
* Reducing depression and
anxiety
* Reducing tension within
muscles
* Increasing body awareness
In British Columbia, over 75 percent of medical physicians regularly refer their patients to a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) - and they make these referrals because massage therapy is both accessible and effective in the treatment of their patients' conditions.
Massage therapy is also remarkably effective when used as part of a preventive care program. Some examples of general wellness care include pre or post-natal care (pregnancy), infant massage, stress management, sports training, injury prevention and performance enhancement.

Restoring Movement
Neurological Physiotherapy Specializing in:
· Stroke
· Head Injury
· Spinal Cord Injury
· Other neurological disorders
Rick's Mission Statement:
To help people find ways of moving with greater ease,
allowing them to experience greater physical comfort and independence, and thus enjoy improved fulfillment in the lifestyle and the activities that are important to them.
Who is a beneficial candidate of Neurophysiotherapy?
Stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury,cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons etc.
Rick works primarily with patients impaired by neurological injury or disease. Stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, including cerebral palsy and various disease processes such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinsons disease. It is now widely accepted that neuroplasticity is lifelong and the human brain never loses its ability to change, adapt and learn. No matter how long ago a neurological trauma or disease occurred, a motivated individual can always make some improvements in their ability to move.
Sports and Orthopaedic Injuries
Because all human movement is based on neuromotor patterns anyone with a movement impairment can benefit from re-learning normal movement patterns. So people with sports or musculo-skeletal injuries also benefit tremendously from this approach. Rick's goal is always to treat the individual as a whole and get to the source of the problem: If you have a sore elbow he will usually help you to improve the movement of your wrist, shoulder and back, as all parts are connected and invariably all parts contribute to the pattern that created and sustains your problem.

What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a therapeutic method used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. Acupuncture is safe and effective and is often successfully used as an alternative to medications or even surgery. "Classical" acupuncture was developed in China as a system of diagnosing and treating pain and disease. It defines acupuncture as one component of Traditional chinese Medicine which aims to balance energy and blood in the body in order to keep it functional and healthy.
Acupuncture
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain relieving chemicals called 'endorphins.' These chemicals mimic morphine by attaching to opiate receptor sites found throughout the nervous system. Endorphins help to block pathways that relay pain messages from the body to the brain, resulting in relief of pain, general relaxation and biochemical restoration of the body's own internal regulation system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture stimulates the body's natural healing abilities, reducing inflammation, and promoting physical and emotional well-being.
How Many Treatments ?
The number of treatments will vary with each individual and the condition being treated. For acute problems, only a few treatments may be required. In some cases, one treatment will be sufficient. For complex or longstanding conditions, one or two treatments a week for several weeks may be recommended with less frequent treatment as improvement occurs. Treatment sessions usually last between 15 and 30 minutes and are incorporated into your usual physiotherapy treatment time. Relief may be immediate or occur within a few hours, or after a few days.

Remedy for
Modern
Times
Does It Hurt?
People experience differing sensations with acupuncture. Most patients feel only minimal discomfort as the needles are inserted: some feel no pain at all. Once the needles are in place, there should be no significant discomfort. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and are made from stainless steel. Two or three acupuncture needles would fit inside the barrel of a regular hollow needle used for injections.

Also known as Radial Shock Wave Therapy
A healthy body glows with energy and joy of living. In other words, with vitality and well being. Chronic, irritating pain on structures such as ligaments and tendons are caused by degeneration and overuse.
The consequences are pain, insomnia, lost work time, a reduced quality of life and decreased participation in your favorite activities.
With some conditions, classic, conservative treatment methods are ineffective. For a long time we have understood that it is better to invest in a pain treatment method that is fast and non-invasive with lasting results.
Shock Wave is Often used to treat:
* Shoulder Tendonitis & Calcific Tendinopathy : painful restrictions in shoulder movement
* Epicondylitis (tennis elbow): inflamation of forearm tendons at the elbow
* Plantar Fasciitis (heel spur): most often chronic, pain under the heel
* Achilles Tendonitis: inflamation of the achilles tendon
* Patellar Tendonitis: pain below to the knee cap
Do you SUFFER from chronic PAIN?
When will you feel better?
Normally 3 treatments are necessary, with a 1 week interval between treatments. Each individual treatment lasts approximately 5 to 10 minutes. In most cases, after each individual treatment, there is a significant decrease in pain.
What is Radial Shock Wave Therapy?
Radial Shock Waves are high-energy acoustic percussions transmitted radially (spherically) to the tissue via the skin's surface.
Therapy with Radial Shock Wave uses a monitored dose of intermittent impulse to a very specific target area. The body reacts by increasing metabolic activity where pain occurs. This activates and accelerates the healing process.
... heel pain?
Does it hurt to put your foot on the floor in the morning? Do you refrain from going for a walk? Is even shopping painful?
You could be walking again without any pain!
... elbow pain?
Do you remember having played tennis, squash, golf, badminton without any pain? Do you have elbow pain (tennis elbow)?
Get back the joy of playing sports!
...shoulder pain?
Do you feel pain when you try to raise your arm?
This pain can be relieved without surgical interventions!
Radial Shock Wave Therapy will help you feel better and take full advantage of life!
What happens during treatment?
Following a thorough examination of the painful area by a physiotherapist or physician, Radial Shock Wave Therapy can be applied if indicated. It is most beneficial for chronic conditions persisting over 3-6 months or when other methods of treatment have been tried with no significant success. For better results, Radial Shock Wave Therapy should be applied precisely on the most painful area. A Physiotherapist will provide advice and guidance for exercise progression following treatment.

Pilates Rehabilitation
Pilates rehabilitation works for many reasons. The great attention to detail and form is a perfect way for a client to gain strength in the weaker or injured muscles and joints. Pilates is gentle so there is little worry of over stressing your body. Pilates also develops the smaller muscle groups that work to support joints and bony structures. Because Pilates builds a bodily awareness to balance, the chronically weak and imbalanced muscles become equally strong.
Pilates as rehabilitation is also great preventative medicine. This is a great metaphor for people suffering from arthritis, osteoporosis or fibromyalgia.
Pilates rehabilitation not only develops strength, it increases flexibility in muscles and joints. Clients need to keep their joints oiled up and they do that by using them. Keeping a full or near full range of motion in the joints is immensely important.

Do You Suffer From:
Bladder Problems?
Weak Pelvic Floor Muscles
Pelvic organ prolapse?
Pain during sexual intercourse?
Physiotherapy may be
helpful for you!
There are many factors that can influence your bladder function and pelvic floor muscles:
* Childbirth * Menopause
* Extra body weight * Low back sacral trauma
* Habitual lengthy delays between voiding
These can reduce the muscle tone, awareness and control of your pelvic floor muscles. Add to this weakness of the abdominal wall and you are more susceptible to pelvic organ prolapse, abdominal or inguinal hernias, chronic low back pain and urinary or fecal incontinence.
Your visit may include:
1. Discussions of your history & symptoms of concern
2. Evaluation of:
- pelvic floor dysfunction, this may include an internal vaginal exam with your consent
- breathing patterns - lumbar spine function
3. Education regarding:
- health bladder habits (this may include recording a bladder diary)
- dietary recommendations
4. Treatment involving:
- exercise to activate the pelvic floor & core stability muscles
- manual therapy - muscle stimulation
Incontinence affects 10 - 30% of women at some time in their life.
It IS preventable it is NOT a normal part of aging.
Brenda Walsh, BScP.T., CAMT, CAFCI is a member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Women's Health Division. She has completed professional training in treating urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pre-natal and post-partum health, as well as pelvic pain disorders.
Brenda has been working with patients, male and female with pelvic floor disorders since 1997.
